    The town centre and the three miles of golden beach are literally a couple of minutes’ walk from the apartment, and Whitby has an abundance of activities and amenities to suit all the family. The local tour bus is an excellent way of visiting some of Whitby’s highlights including the stunning Abbey and St. Mary’s Church, positioned on the cliff top where you can enjoy spectacular views over Whitby and out to sea. You can also take one of the many pleasure cruises that will take you out to sea for one hour which is a memorable experience. There are many events going on all year round including Whitby’s own Regatta, Folk Week, music weekends and Goth weekends which offer something to please everyone. If you would like to travel further afield you can visit many pretty coastal resorts dotted along the coast from Whitby including Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay, Sandsend and Staithes which are all worth a day out. The seaside town of Scarborough is only 20 miles away and the stunning historic city of York is only one hour away.

Sea trips are available from the harbour and coarse fishing is enjoyed at nearby Throxenby Mere. The Forge Valley Woodland Reserve lies half a mile’s walk from the cottages and quiet lanes lead directly to Langdale Forest. Golf courses and riding stables are found locally and the more energetic might like to tackle the nearby Cleveland Way long distance footpath, with its stunning views over land and sea. The inviting moorland countryside and picturesque villages of ‘Heartbeat’ fame are a joy to explore and a trip on the North York Moors steam railway is a must. A 30-minute drive up the coast leads to the many delights of Robin Hood’s Bay and the old port of Whitby, a fascinating historic town, traditionally associated with Count Dracula and in whose attractive harbour tall ships often lie at anchor. The great houses of Sledmere, Burton Agnes and Castle Howard are all within 20 miles of the cottages.

The village is home to a 4x4 driving centre which offers action packed days with off-road driver training and quad–biking, and at Sutton Bank, visitors can take a trial lesson at the Yorkshire Gliding Club and visit the nearby famous White Horse near Kilburn. Thirsk, 3 miles, is a quaint market town famous for its connections with James Herriot, the well-known vet and author of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’, its racecourse and 15th century church. Days out can be enjoyed at Rievaulx Abbey near the wonderful town of Helmsley, as well as Castle Howard and Fountains Abbey. Board the steam train at Pickering to be transported through the stunning North York Moors to the coastal port of Whitby and explore the fishing villages at Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes. The Yorkshire Dales are easily accessible by car and the historic walled city of York, 25 miles, with its iconic minster, exquisite architecture, museums and art galleries, is not to be missed when visiting Yorkshire.
