Yorkshire Moors

The Yorkshire moors are not exactly synonymous with seaside holidays. This is a place where you expect to spend hours walking across heathery fells, before settling in by a peat fire in a country pub. But the Yorkshire coast is just as beautiful, captivating and rugged as anywhere inland.

The coast at the edge of the North York Moors National Park is renowned for its gothic charm. Bram Stoker was inspired to write Dracula after a visit to Whitby, and the stark ruins of Whitby Abbey played a key role in the book. Dracula-themed walking tours still take place around the area, although you might prefer to simply stay inside and read the book in a cottage by the sea.

Of course, the Yorkshire coast is not all vampires and drama. There are some truly beautiful little beaches and picturesque villages dotted along the seaside – if you know where to look. Robin Hood’s Bay is one of the prettiest fishing villages in Yorkshire, with postcard-perfect cobbled streets and vintage sea view cottages. And a few miles north of Whitby, the village of Staithes lies on the banks of a stream, surrounded by cliffs and little sandy coves.

Yorkshire’s coastal holiday cottages will bring you closer to these hidden gems so you can discover the magic of the coastline for yourself. Indulge in a spot of fishing, sailing or even wild swimming (if you can handle the icy temperature of the North Sea), and make the most of your seaside cottage experience.

On a bright and sunny day, there is something quintessentially English about taking a picnic down to the beach, and on dark winter nights, a coastal cottage is the cosiest place to be.

Whether you are looking for inspiration for your own gothic masterpiece, or simply need to get away from it all for in a peaceful part of the country, the Yorkshire coast will not disappoint.
