  • Countersett Hall

    Countersett near Hawes

    Grade

    2
    2
    Ref: CC211241
Having reputedly accommodated Mary Queen of Scots in 1561, en-route from France to Scotland, Countersett Hall is a detached holiday property, offering guests the opportunity to follow in royal footsteps and enjoy the rich history of this fabulous property. During major updates in the 1970s, archaeologists discovered a dwelling on the site from as early as the 12th Century. The hall as it stands now dates from the 16th Century, with what is now the dining room and the porch being added in the 17th Century. The porch bears the date 1650 and was built as a surprise wedding gift for his new wife, by the romantic owner Richard Robinson. The property originally carried a thatched roof and the present stone roof is likely to have been installed in the 17th Century. George Fox, the founder of the Quaker movement, stayed at the hall in 1652 and again in 1677 at the invitation of Richard Robinson. Forbidden by law to practice the Quaker faith, it is believed Richard Robinson held illicit meetings in Countersett Hall and spent time imprisoned in York because of his faith. Following his death, his son continued in the Quaker movement, building the meeting house next door to the hall which can be seen today.
A stone built manor house and Grade II listed building, the property has retained many period features including mullioned windows, flag floors, period fireplaces and oak panelling. The present owners have worked hard to offer comfortable, well-presented accommodation to compliment this charming property.
Set in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, Lake Semerwater is on the doorstep – the second largest natural lake in Yorkshire, and the market town of Hawes is just a short drive away. Guests will enjoy the stunning scenery of this distinctively dales location. Rolling hills, quaint villages and traditional village pubs are all within easy reach. Additional parking is available in the main car park nearby.
