Warminster

Warminster is located between the historic cities of Salisbury and Bath, within a region of most beautiful rural landscapes. This old corn market settlement is a suitable for exploring The New Forest National Park, the Cotswolds and the cities of Bath and Salisbury.

The town, Saxon in origin, is surrounded by prehistoric settlements, including Iron Age hill forts at Scratchbury Camp, Arn Hill, Battlesbury Camp and Cley Hill. Warminster developed during the late Middle Ages thanks to the cloth and wool industry and its thriving corn market. The Minster Church of Saint Denys was built at the height of the town’s prosperity and contains an organ that was originally intended for Salisbury Cathedral. Many of the buildings that border Market Place are stores, inns and warehouses that survived from the corn market days.

Located at the head of the Wylye Valley and on the edge of Salisbury Plain, Warminster is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, and walking is particularly pleasurable in the area. There are a number of beautiful strolls around Warminster itself, and further afield, New Forest National Park, and three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (Cranbourne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs, North Wessex Downs and the Cotswolds) contain a host of beautiful walks and hikes. Fishing is available on the River Wylye, which runs through the town. Golf, cycling, horse riding, sailing, bird watching and hunting are among the other activities available in the area.

Longleat House and Safari Park are located nearby and the New Forest National Park, a medieval English deer hunting area, contains a mixture of flora and fauna rich woodlands, bogs, and heaths, and many beautiful byways and ancient villages. Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, and Avebury are among the other not-to-be-missed sites in the region.
