Royal Wootton Bassett

Royal Wootton Bassett is strategically located for exploring the rural Cotswolds countryside, towns and villages. It’s also handy for days out to Bath and Oxford as well as a host of excellent visitor attractions and places of historical interest.

The town itself has some lovely Georgian buildings that can be seen in the High Street and its most well-known landmark is the 17th century Town Hall, where the Wootton Bassett Museum is now housed. Visitors to the town are able to follow a town trail taking in historically significant buildings, including some of the many inns and taverns.

The Jubilee Lake is situated in a lovely valley on the edge of the town. There are plenty of benches and it is a popular destination with families, walkers and anglers, as well as wildlife enthusiasts, who will enjoy the birds and other wildlife in this designated Nature Reserve. Another popular walk is along the tow path of the now derelict Wilts & Berks Canal. There are plans to restore the waterway, but at present, it is a peaceful place for a walk, with benches at the slipway and bridges over the canal.

Less than ten minutes from Royal Wootton Bassett is Studley Grange, a visitor attraction where you will find Butterfly World housed in a tropical greenhouse, an Animal Paddock, a soft play area and a craft village housing many specialist shops.

In recent times Royal Wootton Bassett is probably best known because the role it played in the repatriation of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, when the community repeatedly gathered to show its respects along the route. Due to this, in 2011, Wootton Bassett was the first town to be granted royal patronage since 1909.

Within easy reach of places such as Avebury, Stonehenge and Castle Combe, Royal Wootton Bassett makes an excellent holiday destination. Come and find out for yourself; search for cottages in Royal Wootton Bassett.
