Marlborough

An archetypical English market town, Marlborough, in the north east corner of rural Wiltshire, is located on the banks of the River Kennet and the ideal location for a cottage holiday in a beautiful part of England.

The town''s High Street is home to many stunning examples of historical architecture and the jewel in the crown is the Merchant''s House. The house was built by a wealthy silk merchant in 1653 and still retains much of its original interior, where internationally acclaimed paintings and decorative features can be seen.

The High Street is believed to be one of the widest in Britain and at either end of it stands a church of great historical importance. The Church of St Peters, with its gothic-inspired tower, was built in 1460 and has since stopped serving as a place of worship, today serving as an arts centre that welcomes thousands of tourists annually. St Mary’s church, at the opposite end of the street, is also of architectural importance, and bears the scars of a battle in 1642 during the English Civil War fought between the monarchists and parliamentary forces.

There are plenty of outdoor activities to keep you occupied. The River Kennet is the ideal place to rent a canoe or kayak and go exploring, or for the less adventurous, there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy a spot of fishing. There is an abundance of walks through Marlborough and into the surrounding Wilshire countryside, and many trails and cycle paths lead past the river and into the Kennet Valley beyond.

    This first and second floor apartment is housed in a building dating back to the 18th century, and is above a jeweller’s shop, right in the heart of the high street in Marlborough. The large windows at the front of the apartment are a wonderful viewing point for the comings and goings in the town. To the rear, a door from the kitchen leads out onto a private, secluded and fully enclosed courtyard patio, a delightful and peaceful place to sit and relax in. An extra benefit is a free private allocated parking space just behind the property. The apartment has been lovingly renovated and features dramatic chandeliers in the hall and on the landing, in keeping with the period of the property.
    Marlborough is an old English market town with a unique broad high street which is partly arcaded, and hosts a diverse range of small independent shops, bookshops, antique emporiums and eateries. The town straddles the former stagecoach route from London to Bath, and lies alongside the River Kennet.
    The high street is lined with 16th to early 19th-century houses and old coaching inns, with a perpendicular church standing proudly at each end - St Mary’s, where a curfew bell still sounds each evening, and St Peter’s, with its impressive Norman doorway. Behind the high street lies a labyrinth of alleyways filled with half-timbered cottages, and on the north side are many interesting colonnades. Regular street markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The annual jazz festival takes place every July, and other cultural events and food fairs are ongoing throughout the year. In the oldest part of the town (to the west) is the famous Marlborough College, established in 1843. The college stands beside Castle Mound, where Stone Age and Roman remains have been found. Legend claims that Merlin (King Arthur’s wizard), is buried under the mound. The beautiful open spaces of the Marlborough Downs and Salisbury Plain are perfect for keen walkers and cyclists. Within an hour’s drive, visitors can reach the cities of Bath and Salisbury, the prehistoric stone circles at Stonehenge and Avebury, and to the north, the Cotswolds and Oxford.
