Find cottages in Devizes

The market town of Devizes is located in the heart of Wiltshire and is surrounded by attractive villages, stately homes and lovely countryside for the visitor to explore by car, by bike or on foot.

The town’s history is fascinating, from its establishment by the Normans to its heyday in Georgian times. There are many fine listed buildings to see, as well as the 19th century castle, which is situated on the site of the original Norman stronghold. Following the town’s Medieval Trail is a good way for visitors to understand its history, and the Wiltshire Heritage Museum also houses displays tracing the history of the area.

Devizes is famous for the Wadsworth brewery and the beautiful shire horses still deliver beer to pubs around the brewery every weekday, weather permitting. The visitor centre houses a collection of brewing memorabilia and visitors can also enjoy a guided tour of the brewery.

The town has a wide range of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as specialist markets and high street chains. In the Ginnel, a quaint shopping alley off Market Place, you will find lovely little shops selling everything from gifts and jewellery to natural therapy items.

The Kennet and Avon canal runs through the town and visitors can walk along the tow path to see the famous Caen Hill locks, a flight of locks that raise the water level a total of 72 metres. The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust Museum is located in an historic bonded warehouse on the wharf in Devizes and shows the history of the canal from its construction to the present day. Boat trips on the canal are available in the summer.

Devizes is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding villages and for day trips to Stonehenge, Bath, Salisbury or Avebury. If you would like to find out more about what this part of Wiltshire has to offer, search for holiday cottages in Devizes today.
