Bradford-on-Avon

Bradford-on-Avon lies on the western edge of Wiltshire, bordering Somerset. Seen as the outermost town of the Cotswolds, this handsome market town attracts visitors with its blend of ancient architecture and leisurely, riverside way of life.

Many of the old buildings hark back to the town’s milling days, with perfectly preserved clothiers houses and weaver’s cottages. The hills surrounding are scattered with traditional Cotswold stone cottages and provide a romantic backdrop to this bustling English country town on the banks of the River Avon.

Trace the history of Bradford-on-Avon from Iron Age dwelling to fashionable, modern working town. The fascinating Saxon Church of St Laurence is dated beyond the 1120s and is a beautiful example of Anglo-Saxon architecture with rich, story-filled interiors. The region’s religious heritage can be explored at Tithe Barn, a fine example of a medieval monastic building of the 14th century with a spectacular wooden cruck roof.

Near Tithe Barn is a residency of artists and restorers working the quintessential Cotswold pursuits of crafts and antiques. Shop for unique works of art for your home, see the workshops in action or have a cream tea in the beautiful gardens on the grounds. Bradford-on-Avon has many irresistible English pubs, some specialising in real ale, such as the Georgian Castle Inn, some famous for lavish country cooking and roaring log fires, such as the Poplars.

Heading out of the town, the hills offer a variety of country walks and pony trekking. The canal towpath route of the River Avon to Bath is an excellent cycle route with multi-coloured narrow boats, ancient aqueducts and pretty stone bridges.

Bradford-on-Avon is loved for its midway location, known as a ‘mini Bath’, yet encompassing the idyllic Cotswold charm. Search for holiday cottages in Bradford on Avon and discover the magical appeal of cottage country living.
