Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. But with so many beautiful locations – and so much to see and do – your only problem may be deciding where to enjoy your break. London is obviously a huge draw with tourists and holidaymakers but you’re guaranteed a fantastic cosmopolitan experience in some of England’s other major cities too: Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Chester and more all offer wonderful shopping with fine dining and some justly celebrated heritage.

England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks.     Just 2 miles distant lies Lyme Regis, setting for the TV adaptation of John Fowles’ novel A French Lieutenant’s Woman. Here colourful fishing vessels and pleasure craft line the pretty harbour, and a host of outdoor activities, such as fishing, boating, sailing and windsurfing tuition, and golf can be enjoyed. Superb coastal walks can be taken along the World Heritage Coast, with its stretches of fossil beaches to explore, and magnificent views to admire from Golden Cap – the highest point on England’s south coast at 626-ft high.
    Nearby, Hardy Country beckons visitors to discover the rolling green pastures and pretty thatched villages made famous in his novels, while for a great family day out, the Georgian seaside town of Weymouth is within easy reach, offering in addition to its harbour and sandy beaches, a host of all-weather attractions, as well as several RSPB sanctuaries. Also well worth a day trip is the county town of Dorchester (20 miles), alias Hardy’s Casterbridge; offering a bustling market square, and some excellent shops and restaurants, Dorchester is also a great base from which to explore the impressive Maiden Castle rising up from the plains. Exeter is within easy driving distance, its skyline dominated by the distinctive monument of St Peter’s Cathedral. Other important historical buildings in the city include the 14th-century Guildhall, several ancient churches and the restored Quayside with its Custom House dating back to 1681. Another town well worth a visit is Weymouth, with many attractions for all the family. The Sea Life Park gives the opportunity to get close to sharks and rays, the Deep Sea Adventure tells the sobering story of the Titanic disaster and The Timewalk contains an entertaining and educational walk-through exhibition of Weymouth’s maritime and brewing past.
    Nearby Sidmouth boasts nearly 500 buildings listed as having special historic or architectural interest, and in August the town hosts what many consider to be the country’s best folk festival at the beginning of August. Folk and roots artists from around the world as well as dance and theatre companies take over various venues in the eight-day event. The fishing village of Beer lies huddled within a small sheltered cove between gleaming white headlands. Much of the village remains unchanged since the time when it was a smugglers’ eyrie. With numerous stately homes and gardens to visit locally, including Abbotsbury Swannery and Tropical Gardens, ancient forts perched upon hilltops affording far-reaching views and a host of seaside towns, including Seaton (with its tramway) stretching along the coastline, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this part of the country.     Dating back to the 13th century these charming holiday cottages occupy a peaceful location, and command views over the owners’ 250-acre working Charolais beef farm, bordered by the River Teign on the edge of the village of Teigngrace. This lovely and popular part of South Devon has much to offer with glorious beaches, meandering estuaries and some very pretty countryside. Also within easy striking distance is the rugged expanse of Dartmoor, its wild beauty changing colour with the varying seasons, its picturesque villages, Dartmoor ponies and Tors. Walnut Cottage (ref 26729) and Oakapple Cottage (ref 26721) are barn conversions offering comfortable holiday accommodation. Acorn Cottage (ref 25544) and Oak Leaves (ref 25560) were originally farm buildings and have since been carefully converted into two spacious and very comfortable holiday cottages. Side by side each has its own patio. The Farmhouse (ref 25545) was the original farmhouse since 1640 and this now has been tastefully converted for use as a holiday cottage. Barnyard Cottage (ref 25546) is the original building, built in the 13th century and was in later years the kitchen for the farmhouse; now it has been tastefully converted to form a very comfortable holiday home. The owners will be delighted to show children around the farm and are always on hand to tell guests of the many attractions this lovely area has to offer. There are also chickens wandering around the farm, look out for the eggs. There is also a designated dog walking area, set in half an acre. Situated close to the owners caravan park, but retaining their privacy, all of the cottages have use of the heated outdoor swimming pool, there are also 2 coarse fishing lakes, (must have own licence or purchase a day ticket). Twelve Oaks is an ideal location for those who want to leave behind the strains of city living and relax in a peaceful rural setting. Wander along pretty streams, explore rambling woods, and trek over undulating hills. There are so many attractions close by including Go Ape or cycling in nearby Haldon Hill, Crealy Adventure Park and Woodlands all within a 25 mile radius. Closer to home, visit Paignton Zoo, Model Village at Babbacombe or the cliff railway. There are some very nice sandy beaches in Paignton, Dawlish, and Goodrington. Take a look at all the NT places such as Castle Drogo or Agatha Christies home Greenway. Take a ferry to Dartmouth and visit the castle or take a boat trip up the river. There is the steam train that is always a fun day out. Bird watching at the nature reserve in Dawlish Warren, or for walkers, walk the Templar Way from Teignmouth to Haytor - 21 miles. The farm itself dates back to William the Conqueror and was mentioned in the Domesday Book survey of 1086. Explore the surrounding countryside either on foot in the neighbouring Blackdown Hills, or by car with the historic market town of Honiton and the majestic Jurassic Coast just a short drive away. There is also shared use of a heated indoor swimming pool to keep the kids entertained without the need for travelling, and ample space in which to kick a ball around or take the dogs for a well deserved walk. Younger children can entertain themselves in the enclosed play area with swings and sandpit whilst the young adults of the group can sink into a book or get online with wi-fi access in each of the properties.
    Swallow Cottage (ref 31207), Apple Cottage (ref 31206), Cider Cottage (ref 31208) and Haybarn Cottage (ref 31209) used to be an integral part of the working farm and date back to the Domesday Book although a lot has changed since then. All the cottages have been carefully restored with flagstone floors, oak beams and furnished with beautiful beds and ample furniture. Relax in front of the TV, get online or cook up a feast in the well-equipped kitchen. Swallow Cottage, Cider Cottage and Haybarn Cottage are all wheelchair-friendly. There’s also plenty of communal space around the farm including a marvellous, shared conservatory which overlooks a large, well-stocked fish pond for duck and moorhen watching. The conservatory can seat up to twenty two people for dinner and is a great sun trap. In the evening guests can light the woodburner for a little extra comfort and simply relax with a good book. The picturesque fishing villages of Tintagel, Rock and Padstow are close by, and the wild beauty of Dartmoor and Bodmin Moors are within easy driving distance, as is the Eden Project.     Linnets is a rather special property in the heart of rural Somerset. Not only does it have its own private outdoor heated swimming pool, it also caters for guests who may have specific disabled requirements including a mobility scooter. The house is spacious and well-furnished with lots of natural light and does not feel at all clinical. The downstairs is completely laid out for disabled people, (except a hoist), with low level light and plug sockets. The downstairs double bedroom is located next to a spacious wheelchair friendly wet room with emergency alarm, raised toilet, grab rails, low level basin and two heights for shower (including moveable chair). The kitchen has areas with low level worktops, electric hob, sink and microwave set at appropriate levels with a larger main oven above. The large living room is fitted with an induction loop for the hard of hearing, and has wide patio doors leading out to the garden. Upstairs are two large bedrooms with zip and link super king beds which can be made up as twin beds on request, plus an extra single bed.
    The property is semi-detached, adjoining the friendly and very helpful owners’ home, yet it is completely private with its own entrance driveway and parking area and secluded garden with large heated outdoor swimming pool to the rear (9.7m x 4.8m). The pool is open and heated 3rd May to 27th September (on request), there is also a large patio area surrounding the pool and plenty of outdoor seating, garden furniture and a summer house with many items for all the family to sue including sun loungers, barbecue, numerous games and and swimming equipment.
    The pretty village of Fitzhead has a wonderful inn serving food on a daily basis, about ten minutes walking distance, and there is a play area for children near the village church. The West Somerset Steam Railway is approximately 3 miles away at Bishops Lydeard. Other nearby attractions include Minehead, Blue Anchor, Watchet and Porlock with its famous Weir which is close to the stunning coast and countryside of Exmoor National Park. Also the famous resorts of Lynton and Lynmouth, Valley of the Rocks, Dunster and Dunster Castle, are well worth a visit. While Tropiquaria near Watchet and many more interesting places to visit. Originally created in the 1920s, the Woodland Walk is a circular walk that skirts the perimeter of the estate and gives breathtaking sea views. There is shared use of an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, which are both heated. There is also a separate shallow children’s pool next to both the outdoor and indoor pools.
