Central England is often overlooked when it comes to staycations and traditional holidays – yet this is perhaps the most fascinating part of the country, bursting with centuries of history, acres of stunning scenery, and a rich culture which you won’t find anywhere else. Plan a lengthy hike across the Peak District in Derbyshire, or a scenic drive through the traditional rural villages of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. Cottages with swimming pools near Rutland are great for wildlife spotting – the Rutland Water Nature Reserve is teeming with otters, ospreys and other rare creatures, and the area is particularly popular with bird watchers during mating season.
Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire are great for history and literary fans, boasting iconic sites such as Powick Bridge (where the English Civil War began), and of course, Sherwood Forest, the stomping ground of Robin Hood.
Cottage with private pools in Hertfordshire and Lincolnshire are perfectly located for walking holidays, while Staffordshire is home to the more challenging Cannock Chase AONB, as well as parts of the Peak District and National Forest.
