Once the iron industry faded Mayfield became a hotbed of smuggling, known as ‘owlers’ the farmers smuggled wool out of the country and returned with brandy and silk! An excellent walking and cycling territory with a 3 mile circular walk around the village or slightly further afield, explore the Cuckoo Trail, Bewl Water and Bedgebury Pinetum. Battle Abbey, Batemans, Rudyard Kipling’s home (NT) and Charleston Farm house are well worth visiting. Enjoy beautiful walks with over 50 miles of footpaths and bridal ways, where there are many historical sites to be seen along the way. Nearby, there is a large park with plenty to do for the children. Train enthusiasts can take a journey on the Bluebell Railway or the Kent and East Sussex steam railway.
