By Wyndham Vacation Rentals

On the western edge of the Weald and less than 40 miles south of London, is the vibrant town of Uckfield. Its rural location is handy for exploring the pretty towns and villages in the Sussex countryside as well as day trips to the South Downs and coast.

In years gone past it was the resting place for pilgrims en route to Canterbury, Chichester and Lewes, in the late thirteenth century. Pudding Cake Lane in Uckfield is so named as it was a place where pilgrims would stop at an inn for slices of pudding cake and the oldest standing house in Uckfield, the 15th century Bridge Cottage, now houses a museum detailing the settlement’s growth.

Unknown to many, Uckfield is home to an historical cinema; the Picture House cinema was established in 1915 and is still open today for those seeking adventure on the big screen. The movies are not the only way you will find a mystery to solve in Uckfield, as the town plays host to many a myth and mystery play.

For trivia lovers Uckfield was the last place that Lord Lucan was seen before his mysterious disappearance, and the fossilised remains that turned out to be the hoax of the Piltdown Man were presented in the area. To complete the trio there is a spooky barren woodland nearby that is said to be the home of Nan Tuck’s Ghost, the ghost of a witch said to chase away visitors (let’s hope not!).

Much more tangible is the beautiful countryside that surrounds Uckfield. West Parks, Hempstead Meadows and Harland’s Pond are just some of the local nature reserves that are home to unusual flora and fauna, wetlands and the remains of Mesolithic settlements.

Whether you are looking for history, mystery or the beauty of Mother Nature, then Uckfield could be the perfect place for your break, so search for cottages in Uckfield and start planning your getaway today.

  • Poundgate Park Cottages - Poundgate Park House

    Near Crowborough

    Ref: UKC826

Set within their own grounds, these two adjoining, well-presented holiday properties are nestled just across the road from Ashdown Forest, an ancient area of peaceful heathland within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. They both feature beautiful original art works throughout.

Poundgate Park House (UKC826) can accommodate up to ten holidaymakers in style, with a balconied bedroom that commands far-reaching, unbroken views across fields, along with a wood burner in the living room to provide that warm and welcoming ambience after a leisurely stroll through the forest.

Comfortably sleeping up to four guests, Poundgate Park Cottage (UKC827) boasts ground floor accommodation with a large walled garden with its own apple orchard.

The forest is a haven for native wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled for deer, badgers and grazing sheep. It’s also perfect terrain not only for walkers, but for cyclists as well. 2 miles away is Crowborough – highly acclaimed by the Edwardians as a health resort due to its height above sea level. The town is also the former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes, and should the weather take a turn for the worse, the leisure centre provides excellent swimming opportunities.

Royal Tunbridge Wells makes for an equally great day out just 7 miles away. The town takes its name from the well in the centre, an ancient chalybeate spring that was first discovered over 400 years ago. The iron-rich waters were served up to v`isitors by a ‘Dipper’, a tradition that is still proudly carried on even today. The Pantiles, a Georgian colonnade that once served as a meeting place for gentry, is also well worth a visit thanks to its eclectic mix of shops, eateries, art galleries and a weekly farmers’ market.

Other historic attractions in the region include a fairy tale moated castle at Bodiam, the turreted Arundel Castle, the blooming gardens of Herstmonceux Castle and Sheffield Park. Take the Bluebell Railway for a trip through some of the most beautiful countryside in the High Weald, observe the animals (and Thomas the Tank Engine) at Drusillas Zoo Park, or partake in some wine tasting events at one of the local vineyards. Alternatively, head to the beach for a day at Brighton or Eastbourne, take a boat trip around the bay or stroll along the pier with an ice cream in hand. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 150 yards. These properties can be booked together to accommodate up to 14 guests.
