Sussex is where it all began. In 1066, this is where the legendary Battle of Hastings decided the fate of England and heralded the beginning of Norman rule. In fact, the unique history of Sussex dates back much, much further than that – some of the earliest human remains were discovered at Boxgrove, near Chichester, dating back more than half a million years.
Clearly, there is something special about this modest county. And the only way to find out for yourself is to settle into a cottage with a pool and really take in your surroundings. From rural towns such as Arundel (on the edge of the South Downs), and Uckfield (near High Weald), to the Sussex Heritage Coast with its dramatic cliffs and beaches, this is a county which demands your attention.
Holiday cottages with pools near Brighton are particularly popular with beach-lovers and artists, who will feel right at home with the city’s alternative scene. But if you want to learn more about the area, you might prefer to find a cottage with a private pool towards the east of Brighton and Hove.
Between Eastbourne and Hastings, there is a lovely coastal route which is accessible by foot or by bike, and it will take you right past Pevensey, where the Normans landed all those years ago. Beyond Hastings, the market town of Rye is a foodie delight, with fresh fish and local produce being sold along the Strand every Wednesday.
However, if you are simply looking for a relaxing seaside break, you can’t go far wrong with a cottage with a swimming pool near Bognor Regis or Selsey, which both boast pretty beaches and an array of restaurants, cafes and bars.
There are so many different sides of Sussex that you will find yourself returning again and again, yet never having the same experience twice.
