The town’s most important event is the Lewes bonfire on November 5th, marking the uncovering of the gunpowder plot in 1605. Country walks abound from the town including over Mount Caburn to Glynde, Lewes Brooks, an RSPB reserve, or stroll along the River Ouse and walk on the South Downs Way. Enjoy the summer Festival at Glyndbourne or hop on a ferry at Newhaven and cross the channel to Dieppe. If you wish to travel further afield, the coastal towns of Eastbourne and Brighton are only 8 miles away.
