Cycle through the woods to the lighthouse, or down the lanes and breath the fresh air whilst spotting birds such as buzzards and egrets.     The medieval county town of Lewes is surrounded by chalk cliffs nestling in the Sussex countryside and still presided over by the remains of a Norman Castle. Lewes Cottage is just up from the high street and offers comfortable accommodation over four floors close to the town centre, where you can indulge in some retail therapy and browse amongst the independent retailers, boutiques, craft workshops, antiques and bookshops. Famous people with links to the town include Thomas Paine, author of the ‘Rights of Man’, which forms the basis of the American Revolution, who was born in Lewes, and Thomas Harvard, founder of Harvard, who was married here. Take a tour round the Harvey’s Brewery, the oldest independent brewers in east Sussex and sample the wares. On Tuesdays, spot the Harvey’s Brewery horse and cart in the high street - a reminder of a bygone era. Visit the town house of Anne of Cleves, Henry VIII’s fourth wife. The town’s most important event is the Lewes bonfire on November 5th, marking the uncovering of the gunpowder plot in 1605. Country walks abound from the town including over Mount Caburn to Glynde, Lewes Brooks, an RSPB reserve, or stroll along the River Ouse and walk on the South Downs Way. Enjoy the summer Festival at Glyndbourne or hop on a ferry at Newhaven and cross the channel to Dieppe. If you wish to travel further afield, the coastal towns of Eastbourne and Brighton are only 8 miles away.
