Find cottages in Rye

Well preserved medieval architecture, a fascinating maritime history and a combination of lovely coast and country makes Rye a great candidate for a cottage holiday.

Perched on a hill, the medieval town of Rye is a maze of Georgian buildings and narrow cobbled streets. Its maritime traditions go back to Norman times and it was one of the English port towns that formed the Cinque Ports Confederation in defence against frequent French attacks.

Built in 1249 as part of the town's defences, the Ypres Tower's balcony offers wonderful views of Romney Marsh and the surrounding countryside. Adjoining Rye Castle Museum is split over two sites, while the East Street site houses a fascinating collection of the town's history, including an 18th Century fire engine. Other notable buildings include St. Mary's Parish Church and the Rye Heritage Centre which offers a fun look at the past, through the famous Rye Town Model sound and light show, as well as the ghost walking audio tours which are available to hire.

The Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is only a short drive from many of our featured Rye cottages; it's a mosaic of habitats beside the sea, including wetlands, shingle ridges, saltmarshes, rivers and reed beds, there's a wide range of wildlife, birds and plants to discover from a large network of footpaths and birdwatching hides. From Camber Sands to Rye Bay, there are miles of spectacular coastline to see, perfect for a drive, walk or bike ride.

For a rich and historical experience, search for Rye holiday cottages and pay 1066 Country a visit.
