Stowmarket is probably the largest town in mid-Suffolk, so there’s all the facilities you will need on your cottage break right on the doorstep and it also provides an excellent base for exploring the rural delights of this lovely part of the world.

The town has a long history, which includes a mention in the Domesday Book. This history can be seen today in the form of the many historic buildings which still stand in the town, many of them with National Heritage status.

One of the most popular attractions is the Museum of East Anglian Life. In addition to telling the story of farming in the area, including an exhibition of steam engines, the museum is in fact also home to farm animals, including some magnificent Suffolk Punch horses. The museum’s woodland setting is perfect for a relaxing stroll too. Tranquillity is also the order of the day at Helmingham Hall Gardens which surround a historic Tudor mansion. These beautifully kept gardens attract thousands of visitors every year.

As Stowmarket is a traditional market town the street market here is one of the best in the area. Held twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays, the market is a colourful blend of stalls selling all manner of goods. The town is also home to a farmer’s market, held once a month. The shopping areas are a good blend of traditional independent stores and major chains.

A central position makes days out possible to Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich and Norwich; Thetford Forest and the Suffolk coast are also within reach.
