Find cottages in Saxmundham

At the very heart of Suffolk’s Heritage Coastal region is the historic market town of Saxmundham. As hinted at in the unusual town name, Saxmundham has a history that dates back to 1086 and the time of the Saxons. Apart from its historical interest it’s also a great location for cottage holidays in Suffolk.

As is to be expected of a town as historic as Saxmundham, there are a number of notable buildings in the town, all of which can be seen by following the town trail. The trail starts at the Victorian railway station and journeys around the town, taking in the notable buildings and history. One of the most distinctive of Saxmundham’s historic buildings is the neo-classical fronted Market Hall, which is striking amongst the Georgian and Victorian building of the main high street and next to the even more historic Bell Hotel.

The Bell Hotel in Saxmundham has served as an inn for many centuries and provided a resting place for weary travellers and even royalty, as King George II notably stopped by in 1737; the King was so taken by the local hospitality that it took four hours for what was originally planned as a quick change of horses. If you wish to experience the hospitality as King George did, then Saxmundham is full of friendly local shops, pubs and restaurants.

The full history of the town can be found at the local museum and if you want to explore in and around the town, there are a number of delightful footpaths and walks close by.

Saxmundham is the perfect base for exploring nearby National Trust and English Heritage properties, such as Framlingham Castle or the beautiful Leiston Abbey. It’s also close to several nature reserves, including Minsmere, an important RSPB nature reserve and visitor centre and areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
