Bury St Edmunds

The historic market town of Bury St Edmunds dates back to Saxon times and is filled with historical sites and monuments which bear testament to its past, and includes an eclectic mixture of architecture that spans the Medieval, Gothic, Regency and Edwardian periods.

The town has an award-winning market that draws crowds from far and wide and the busy town centre is full of excellent restaurants, cafes, bars and tea rooms, as well as a very good shopping centre. The town itself is a look back in time, with elegant Georgian town squares, thatched buildings that have stood for hundreds of years and historic buildings such as St Mary''s Church and of course the stunning revived Gothic Cathedral.

For an insight into the past visit the Moyse’s Hall Museum which is housed in a most stunning medieval building. Bury St Edmunds also has the last remaining Regency theatre; The Theatre Royal. For a live music venue check out what’s on at the Apex.

Visit the gardens that surround the ruins of the Abbey and, of course, the ancient ruins themselves. Sitting in the centre of town, the Abbey Gardens are the perfect place for a romantic walk in the evening or a sunny family picnic during the day. The gardens are often home to summer fairs and music performances and the town always has something exciting just around the corner.

Here you will find a small fun fair, a Sealife Centre, Norfolk Lavender and lots of traditional seaside shops and amusements, not to mention a beach which, when the tide is out, really does seem to go on forever. Those wishing to stay closer to home will be spoilt for choice too, since High Lodge Thetford Forest, with its many walking and cycling routes, and Go Ape are both nearby. Lakenheath itself has so many places to eat that guests can literally walk to a different restaurant or café each night. And for those wishing to cook at home and enjoy the ambience of Cobden House, there’s a well-equipped kitchen and a light and airy dining space. Alternatively, there is a completely private, enclosed garden which the owners have named ‘The Secret Garden’ to relax and dine in. All of which make Cobden House a great choice for your holiday.
