The historic town of Leek hugs the southern border of the Peak District National Park. Traditional markets and Victorian architecture are at the heart of the town, with the River Churnet flowing through, rugged countryside and the wonderful rock formations of The Roaches are on the doorstep.

Discover antique shops and independent retailers housed in former Victorian silk mills, an unspoilt shopping centre where you’ll find great local produce. The beautifully restored Butter Market dates back to 19th Century and provides an authentic market experience.

Historical figure and founder of the Arts and Craft Movement William Morris lived and worked in Leek in the late 1800s, and a legacy of interiors and furniture trade remains. Art galleries that boast both traditional and contemporary works are scattered about the town and the Leek Arts Festival is held in May and growing every year.

There is a lot to do in the surrounding areas too, with the nearby Rudyard Lake Steam Railway still chugging through the countryside. Walk, cycle or pony trek through the rugged Peak District or visit one of the many tranquil gardens like the award winning Trentham Estate.     These pretty holiday cottages (refs NT007002 and NT007003) sit on the north bank of the River Manifold and are in a truly get-away-from-it-all location. The cottages are ideally placed for couples or families who like the outdoor life, with outstanding walks and a hard surface cycle way close at hand, together with abundant wildlife and freshwater fishing. Enjoy the view over the river whilst relaxing on the riverbank outside the cottages. They both have bags of character and have been sympathetically converted into comfortable holiday homes using traditional building methods wherever possible. Manifold Valley is a favourite with visitors to the Peak District. There are several caves close to the Manifold Track, the most impressive of which is Thor’s Cave, a former home to Stone Age dwellers and believed to have been inhabited for some 10,000 years. Wetton Mill, which was established in the valley by William Cavendish, second son of Bess of Hardwick, was abandoned in 1857 and one of the buildings has been converted into a very popular tea room.
