Now a Christmas tree and apple juice farm it was once owned by Alfred the Great. Free archaeology and history tour available for guests. Recent excavations revealed that the site had Neolithic occupation circa 2700BC, and an Elizabethan terrace and Jacobean banqueting house, the centre of a wider holding mentioned in the Domesday Book, which stretched from the River Cuckmere to Jevington. There are also ruins of an Elizabethan manor house, restored 14th-century dovecote and ox farmyard of the 18th and 19th century. Quebec Barn (ref 26956) was used as local headquarters by Canadian forces in WW ll. Walking plus cycle trails nearby (hire centre, 1/2 mile), Seven Sisters Country Park, 1 mile, and a secluded beach 1½ miles. Cycle through the woods to the lighthouse, or down the lanes and breath the fresh air whilst spotting birds such as buzzards and egrets. In the evening why not cycle to the cosy pub nearby before retiring to your barn in the woods. Enjoy wildlife in the South Downs National Park.     The medieval county town of Lewes is surrounded by chalk cliffs nestling in the Sussex countryside and still presided over by the remains of a Norman Castle. Take a tour round the Harvey’s Brewery, the oldest independent brewers in east Sussex and sample the wares. On Tuesdays, spot the Harvey’s Brewery horse and cart in the high street - a reminder of a bygone era. Visit the town house of Anne of Cleves, Henry VIII’s fourth wife. The town’s most important event is the Lewes bonfire on November 5th, marking the uncovering of the gunpowder plot in 1605. Country walks abound from the town including over Mount Caburn to Glynde, Lewes Brooks, an RSPB reserve, or stroll along the River Ouse and walk on the South Downs Way. Enjoy the summer Festival at Glyndbourne or hop on a ferry at Newhaven and cross the channel to Dieppe. If you wish to travel further afield, the coastal towns of Eastbourne and Brighton are only 8 miles away. Buses to Brighton leave from the bus stop close to the property every 15 minutes, and takes just 15 minutes to get to the Pavilion and 20 minutes to the pier (traffic permitting).
