Taunton and The Quantocks

The county of Somerset is renowned for its beautiful countryside, which is dotted with cider orchards and rural farmland. At the very heart of cider country, between the Quantock and Blackdown hills, is the bustling market town of Taunton.

Taunton is ideally situated for exploring the West Country. The town dates back to the Norman times and combines traditional architecture with modern facilities including a good choice of shops high street and independent shops that sell specialist and local produce, entertainment and places to eat and drink.

The Taunton Heritage tour is a fascinating guided walk through the some of the town''s most iconic buildings. Highlights include the Somerset Museum and the remains of the castle, the Cider press garden and two churches; St James, which dates back to medieval times and St Mary Magdalene, which originated in the 12th century.

A stroll along the high street will take you to Vivary Park with its extensive lawns, trees and flower displays. There is plenty to keep younger visitors amused including boating ponds, a play area and model railway. There is also a putting green and 18-hole golf course. Nature lovers will enjoy exploring the River Tone and associated waterways, for a relaxing stroll along the tow path, a spot of angling or an opportunity to watch rare birds and other wildlife.
