Find cottages in Shepton Mallet

The town of Shepton Mallet is located in the Mendip District of Somerset, with the rolling Mendip Hills lying just to the north and the River Sheppey runs through the town, creating a picturesque, rural holiday destination for a cottage holiday break in Somerset.

The town has a rich history dating back to Roman times and there are a number of listed buildings that provide an interesting insight into the town’s heritage. The 12th Century parish church of St Peter and Paul, the Market Cross built in 1520 and the medieval market stall ‘The Shambles’ all offer insight into the region’s history; the Radstock Museum tells the story of a town. Shepton Mallet is also home to England’s oldest prison, which operated from 1625 to 2013 and was housed in what is now a stunning listed building.

Beer and cider brewing has been an integral part of life in Shepton Mallet since the 1800s, and the Anglo-Bavarian Brewery still has a presence in this small town. At Kilver Court, visitors can explore the historic gardens or enjoy cider brewed from the same recipe for over 200 years. Babycham was created at the brewery in Kilver Street and visitors can enjoy a glass of this sparkling perry whilst they view the Charlton Viaduct and the verdant gardens of the Court.

Shepton Mallet offers plenty of outdoor activities including some lovely walks in the beautiful countryside surrounding the town. The famous Wookey Hole Caves are also located nearby and Shepton Mallet is the closest town to the site of the Glastonbury festival.

With a rich cultural heritage and the opportunity for plenty of outdoor adventures, Shepton Mallet is a great holiday destination. Search for Shepton Mallet holiday cottages and book your getaway.
