Perhaps most famous today as host of an annual music festival, visitors will find that there’s a lot more to the town of Glastonbury, set amongst the beautiful Somerset countryside and with a rich historic legacy which is just waiting to be explored.

Glastonbury is home to a number of historic attractions which have become world-famous. On the outskirts of the town stands the legendary Glastonbury Tor, a hill which has been linked with the legend of King Arthur, in addition to many other mythological tales. Atop the Tor, you will find the remains of the Church of St. Michael, which dates back to the 14th century.

Back in the centre of town, one of the most popular attractions for visitors is Glastonbury Abbey. Although all that remains of the abbey today is ruins, it is still an impressive sight and, like the Tor, the building has strong connections with Arthurian legend.

Not surprisingly, for an area so richly immersed in history, there are a number of interesting museums in Glastonbury and the nearby area. The Somerset Rural Life Museum is home to a number of exhibits which tell the story of farming in the area and is well worth a visit. In nearby Sparkford, the largest collection of classic cars in the UK can be found at the Haynes International Motor Museum.

If museums are not really your thing, you’ll enjoy browsing the town centre, with its many interesting shops and cafes and exploring the tranquil countryside by foot or on bike.
