Frome

The charming market town of Frome has plenty to offer visitors. It lies in the heart of Somerset surrounded by glorious countryside, rural farmland and cider orchards, and is within easy reach of Bath, Glastonbury and Wells.

There is also a great deal to discover within the town. Frome is full of character, with cobbled streets and the River Frome winding through the Centre. There is also a good range of shops, including bespoke retailers and independent boutiques, and a twice weekly market.

The town possesses more listed buildings than any other town in Somerset. Notable examples include the ancient Cheap Street, with historic buildings and a stream running through the middle, Frome Bridge, an unusual shop-lined bridge dating from 1667, and the magnificent grade I listed Rook Lake Chapel, a centre for arts and entertainment.

Frome is renowned for its flourishing cultural scene, which includes theatres and art galleries. Black Swan Arts is a contemporary gallery and the Merlin Theatre showcases the very best in live entertainment, including music, dance and theatre. On the same site there is an amphitheatre built around an open-air stage where spectacular summer performances are showcased.

Just outside Frome are two castles: Nunney Castle dates back to the 14th century and has a moat, and Farleigh Hungerford is a historic village dominated by a ruined castle. Across the road opposite the castle is Stowford Manor Farm, in an idyllic setting on the river bank. The river is one of only a few in the country with its own swimming club and the farm is open for cream teas in the summer.

There is also plenty to keep younger visitors amused around the area. A short drive away is East Somerset Railway, where you can take the children for a ride on a steam train or head to Longleat Safari and Adventure Park for action packed day out.
