    It was here in 1259 that Sir Richard de Hartle was issued a Papal Bull by Pope Alexander II, allowing him to appoint his own chaplain. The chapel ceased its functions as a place of worship in 1546 and now takes the form of The Chapel and Hartle Cottage. The eight cottages are furnished with antiques and surround a medieval cobbled courtyard. They all retain a wealth of original features including thick stone walls, large oak beams, mullion windows and flagstone floors. Corn has been milled here since the 1500s on the Brookside site, and the present mill buildings date from the 1700s. The original fittings and equipment remain untouched when milling ceased in the early 20th century.
    Ancient stonework, oak beams and centuries old millstones and equipment have been thoughtfully incorporated to create an unforgettable interior for the Grade II listed building, one of Derbyshire’s oldest surviving water mill. You will see inside the property original sections of the wooden mill machinery which have been restored to give a fabulous feeling of the building’s history. Outside, the original wood and iron waterwheels have been restored and are turned from time to time, fed from the waters of the restored mill pond.
    Just half a mile from Bradbourne and 5 miles from Ashbourne, the property is surrounded by some of Derbyshire’s prettiest scenery. The Tissington Trail offers good walking and cycling opportunities, and the village of Tissington itself is a real step back in time, complete with Tisssington Hall. Here visitors can also sample a ride to The Heights of Abraham by cable car and admire the views of ‘Little Switzerland’ as Byron once described this area. For the more inquisitive visit the Mining Museum for a fascinating look into the area’s past. Shop 2 miles, pub 11/2 miles.

    Only a 5-minute walk across meadows from the peaceful and sheltered farmstead setting of these two cottages leads to the shops and village inns of picturesque Edale (a mile by road) and the start of the Pennine Way and its trail over 30,000 acres of National Trust owned High Peak. Converted from an old stone barn and very comfortably fitted and equipped, these spacious cottages enjoy shared use of a paddock garden with a stream, and are adjacent to the owners’ farmhouse home. They are bookable as completely self contained cottages, or, as one very large property sleeping 22 and 2 children in 12 bedrooms. This is excellent walking country, with a glorious landscape of heather clad moors and wind sculptured stones. Pony trekking locally. Cycle hire available 2 miles. Good fly fishing is available at Ladybower Reservoir, 8 miles away. Within 4 miles are the village of Hope (with good shops and pubs) and Castleton, with its Blue John Caverns, Peveril Castle and bustling cafe’s, inns, restaurants and craft shops. Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Bakewell and Buxton are all within 15 miles and Alton Towers is about 1 hour’s drive. The local railway station (0.5 miles) enables return rides from Hope Valley walking, or easy visits to Magna and Meadowhall in Sheffield, and the Science Museum in Manchester.

    Pennine Cottage and Jacob’s Cottage can be connected by the following additional rooms at both ground and first floor levels to accommodate up to 24 guests. Ground floor: Dining/games room (this is formed from the games room when booked as one property and situated next door to the kitchen of Jacob’s Cottage enabling catering for 24 people). Bar area.
