Northumberland

From the sweeping coastline to the ancient forests, Northumberland’s stark landscape tells the story of its history. Along the border with Scotland, a series of walls and old forts are a reminder of the cross-country battles which took place hundreds of years ago; while the outposts and beacons along the coast are left over from Viking invasions.

Northumberland is famous for its abundance of castles from various points in history, and cottages with pools are never too far away from one of these iconic sites. The most popular of all is Alnwick Castle near Alnmouth , which is most famous for its starring role as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films. Bamburgh and Warkworth Castles are also worth a visit, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne has a 2000-year old (haunted) castle in the centre of the city.

If you are staying at a cottage with a swimming pool near the coast, you will have access to some of the most beautiful walks in the country. The Northumberland Coastal Path runs from Berwick-upon-Tweed all the way to Cresswell in the south, passing through pretty villages such as Seahouses, Beadnell and Craster along the way.

Cottages with private pools are particularly popular with hikers who come to Northumberland to explore the Kielder Forest Park, and the North Pennines AONB. From Bellingham and Hexham there are some amazing countryside treks which will really show off the county in all its natural beauty.

But if you want to get to the heart of modern Northumberland, find a holiday cottage with a pool near one of the many rural villages. Most of the communities around East Woodburn , Rothbury and Otterburn are still dedicated to farming, and if you hang around the local pubs for long enough you will hear some fascinating stories about local history.

Whether you are staying at a beach-front cottage by the coast, or in traditional market town such as Morpeth , it won’t take long before you are under the spell of this unique part of England.
