This famous walled town on the banks of the River Tweed, sits just over two miles from the Scottish border; Berwick-upon-Tweed has had a turbulent and fascinating past as it continually changed hands between the Scots and English. Today it draws visitors for not only its history but for its location as a great place for a cottage holiday!

Over the centuries, Berwick-upon-Tweed has seen many changes of ownership. Things were finally settled in 1482, when the town fell under the control of the English. The city walls, which were built around the time of the reign of Elizabeth I to keep out invaders, are still standing today and it is possible to walk almost their entire length.

One of the most iconic images of the town is the magnificent Royal Border Bridge, which spans the River Tweed. Built during the reign of Queen Victoria, this railway viaduct makes an imposing sight and will provide some excellent holiday photographs. Those interested in art are sure to want to experience the Berwick Lowry Trail, which takes in many of the actual sites that inspired the famous artist L S Lowry during his many visits to the town.

The picturesque landscape of the Northumberland and Scottish border region makes Berwick-upon-Tweed an ideal place for outdoor holidays, the surrounding countryside is literally a breath of fresh air and is perfect for walkers and cyclists, with lots of beautiful trails and cycling routes.

Berwick-upon-Tweed is also ideally situated to take in some other famous destinations. Indeed, it is possible to catch a train from the town to Edinburgh and Newcastle to enjoy a day out in these vibrant cities before returning to the tranquillity of your Berwick-upon-Tweed cottage.
