Alnwick

The medieval market town of Alnwick can be found amongst the most beautiful countryside and close by is the stunning Northumberland coast. Famed for its impressive and iconic castle, the town has remained much the same in its street layout and design for hundreds of years, offering a perfect location for a relaxing cottage holiday in Northumberland.

Perhaps one of the most picturesque towns in Northumberland, Alnwick has previously been voted one of the best places to live in England. It’s also, quite naturally, a popular spot for visitors who want to see a slice of Northumbrian history preserved in all its glory.

Alnwick Castle (Often called ‘The Windsor of the North’) stands tall over the town, a splendid example of medieval architecture that dominates the horizon. The castle was used as a location for Hogwarts School in the famous Harry Potter films and has been captured for film and television on many other occasions, due to its impressive towers and perfectly preserved condition. The surrounding Alnwick Gardens are every bit as impressive and contain something for everyone, including a huge tree-house that the kids will love.

Much of the surrounding countryside is managed by the National Trust and the nearby coast has 20 miles of pristine sandy beaches and bays to explore; this area is very popular with walkers, cyclists and bird watchers. As for the town itself, it has plenty of great inns, cafes and places to unwind as well as a very active and renowned theatre Playhouse that hosts all sorts of events throughout the year.

For self-catering accommodation in Alnwick and the area see cottages in Alnwick for a relaxing and rejuvenating break in beautiful and unspoilt Northumberland.
