Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks. Also perfect for walkers, cyclists and ramblers wanting to explore the Durham Dales and North Pennines, guests will find plenty of established local footpaths, cycle paths and bridleways that lead directly from Wolsingham and into some of the most spectacular countryside.
    The popular town of Stanhope is only 6 miles away and guests really must visit the Durham Dales Centre, where there is information regarding walks and cycle routes, a tea room, café and shops, as well as plenty of information regarding local history in the area. The lead mining museum in Killhope is 20 miles away and is another popular attraction, it shows the history of how lead was mined by generations of miners who lived in the Weardale area. Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the Metrocentre, Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland, Derwent Reservoir and Alston, which is the highest market town in England, can all be reached within an hour’s drive and really are worth a visit.
    A little further afield but still within an 1½ hour driving distance, guests will be able to take a day trip to the Lake District, Northumbria and Hadrian’s Wall, Middleton in Teesdale and the High Force, which is the highest waterfall in England.

The town’s main industry is tourism, due to its history, remote location, scenery and close proximity to the stunning Lake District, the North Pennines, Swaledale and Howgill Fells. The uncommonly wide main street, Boroughgate, has been described as one of the finest in England. It runs from the north end, by the cloisters, which were designed by Sir Robert Smirke in 1811, and to the south end, by the castle entrance. The railway station is on the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway, and is a good spot to see the steam trains that often pass on Saturdays. Shop 100 yards, pub and restaurant 2½ miles.

A day trip to Vindolanda, Aydon Castle and Dilston Castle are a must as well as a trip to nearby Newcastle upon Tyne which is only a 20 minute drive away, and offers cultural centres including The Sage and the Centre for Life as well as an extensive range of shops and boutiques.
