  • Portland Cottage

    Helhoughton, nr. Fakenham

    Grade

    Ref: CDDL

Built around 1550 with a flint and brick extension added in Victorian times, Portland Cottage has been carefully renovated to ensure that it offers everything a discerning guest could need without losing any of its charm. Beautifully presented, it has been lovingly restored by an interior designer who has added lots of wonderful bespoke touches, while creating a light and airy getaway. The cottage was originally built as a private dwelling, which was actually used as the local brew house where the tenant sold home brewed ales to the passing farm workers. You can just picture them calling in to have their jugs filled with ale after a long day ploughing and harvesting the surrounding fields, which look the same today as they did over 400 years ago. The adjoining cottage was the local bakery, so the air would have been filled with the most wonderful aromas of beer brewing and bread baking. Portland Cottage was originally part of the Townshend Estate and has strong links to the agricultural revolution as it was Turnip Townshend who invented the 4 crop rotation system that is still used today. Located within the pretty hamlet of Helhoughton, the links to history are all still there, with a beautiful church dating back to the 14th century, and the surrounding meadows and woodlands which are still privately owned by the Townshend family. Locally, you will find beautiful beaches and coastal towns and villages including Wells-next-the-Sea, with its beautiful quay, Blakeney and Hunstanton, with its long stretch of sandy beach. Those looking for stately homes and National Trust properties will find the Sandringham Estate, Holkham Hall and Blickling Hall all within easy reach. With Norfolk being described as ‘the bird watching capital of England’, it is also needless to say there are wildlife watching opportunities galore to be had. Add in great cycle routes and walks and lots of local attractions and places to eat, and you will see why this is such a popular part of Norfolk to visit. Thanks to Portland Cottage and its traditional wood-burning stove, high quality beds and Egyptian cotton sheets, you will be able to relax and unwind after a busy day. Beach 9 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 3½ miles.
