The coastline of the New Forest is full of surprises, making it the perfect place for a family-friendly holiday in a cottage by the sea.
Although the New Forest is best known for its ancient woodlands and lush pastures, it also boasts 40 miles of pristine coastline where you will find some of the prettiest beaches and warmest waters in England. The Solent Strait separates the nearby Isle of Wight from the Dorset and Hampshire coast, so the sea water is surprisingly warm and calm, making it a favourite with novice sailors and wild swimmers. Many amateur sailors got their start in the Solent, and it is hard to beat the view of the coast as seen from the sea – with the dense woodland of the New Forest in the background, and the sparkling waters in the foreground, it is like looking at a painting.
Coastal cottages are the perfect place to take in the sights and immerse yourself in this outdoorsy community. Explore the salt marshes and smugglers coves, or canter along the shoreline with a horse from one of the many local stables. During the summer months, take to the sea and try a spot of paddle boarding, kitesurfing, or scuba diving – the Solent is full of fascinating wrecks dating back hundreds of years. Yachting is one of the most popular activities in this part of the country, and from your sea view cottage you will see scores of white sails peaking over the horizon every single day.
Alternatively, just enjoy the simple pleasures of a seaside cottage – the salty sea air, the fresh seafood, and the stunning views as far as the eye can see.
