Market Rasen

The town of Market Rasen lies on the western edge of the beautiful Lincolnshire Fens, perfect for the great outdoors, peaceful walks and rural charm and the historic city of Lincoln is a short distance to the south for some cultural days out.

Head for the farmers'' market on the first Tuesday of every month and you''ll find a wide range of local produce, such as Lincolnshire Plum Bread, Haslet or tasty Lincolnshire sausages ; just the ticket for taking back to your cottage for a family treat.

The town is probably best known for Market Rasen Racecourse, which is a National Hunt racecourse with a year-round fixtures programme, attracting visitors from across the area. The main event of the year is the Summer Plate meeting, which takes place in July and is a fun day out for the whole family.

Just a short bus ride or drive away is Lincoln, a cathedral city filled with historic buildings. Climb the aptly named ''Steep Hill'' and you''ll be rewarded with views of the beautiful Bailgate quarter, home to independent boutiques, cosy traditional pubs and quaint tearooms, and of course, the stunning spires of Lincoln Cathedral. A wander around the cathedral''s interiors is well worth it; several times a month there are also tours to the top of the spire, by prior arrangement.

If you''re looking for a wider choice of restaurants and bars, the entertainment complex at the Brayford is home to several chain restaurants and a cinema, and you''ll also find several delightful places to eat or enjoy a coffee on Guildhall Street in the city centre.
