Horncastle

The market town of Horncastle lies at the south west foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds and at the edge of the West and Wildmor Fens; the perfect location for anyone looking for a relaxing cottage holiday amongst unspoilt countyside.

Horncastle is renowned for its antique shops and has become a favoured destination of those looking for rare and valued pieces. The Stanhope Memorial in the Market Place is a popular starting point for exploring the many beautiful buildings that make up much of Horncastle’s heritage and the town is also a good base for exploring the surrounding countryside.

Notable landmarks in the town include the 12th Century Church of St Mary, the 17th Century Stockwith Mill, the magnificent 14th Century Tattersall Castle and, of course, the town houses of the renowned executioner William Marwood and explorer and botanist Sir Joseph Banks.

Many of Horncastle’s ancient Roman walls are still in evidence. The ruins of the 11th Century Bolingbroke Castle are also an important historical site, as this illustrious manor was the birthplace of Henry IV. For anyone with an interest in aviation, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Centre is an excellent place to spend an afternoon and in summer, regular air shows take place.

Horncastle’s close proximity to the Wolds and Fens ensures that anyone with a love for the great outdoors has plenty of opportunity to explore these forests and wetlands. Long, lingering walks through the beautiful countryside are an excellent past time for any visitor. Enjoy a day in the Snipe Dales Country Park and wander the trails winding through the countryside and wet valley, or picnic with the kids whilst observing the abundance of wildlife that inhabits this reserve. For those who love their golf, the championship golf course, Woodhall Spa is close by (contact them before you come).
