Walking or cycling is a joy along the 4½-mile seafront to the pretty village of Heysham, itself well worth a visit with its ancient St Patrick’s Church, mysterious 10th-century rock tombs and pretty harbour setting. There are cycle paths galore in the area from the town centre into the heart of Lancaster and beyond, or enjoy a quiet pootle along the canal towpath. For the more ambitious, there is the Morecambe Bay Cycleway, set up and run by Sustrans, running over 100 miles from Walney Island to Glasson Dock. Walkers can enjoy a guided cross bay walk, or alternatively Morecambe is within 45 minutes of stunning Lakeland and Dales scenery. Close by there is an 18-hole golf course, and plenty of welcoming country pubs within easy reach of Morecambe to enjoy a drink by the scenic Lancaster canal or River Lune. For children, there are beaches, swing parks and the noted Happy Mount Park, with a children’s play area and extensive water splash zone. Para-sailing can also be enjoyed on most days at the westerly end of the promenade, and sailing ‘taster’ sessions with the Morecambe Sailing Club.

    In Morecambe centre there is a bowling alley, cinema and evening entertainment at the Platform venue. The famous Art Deco Midland Hotel is also well worth a visit for a special occasion. The historic and vibrant city of Lancaster, 4 miles, oozes Georgian character and charm with its ancient priory church, castle and museums, theatres and many places to eat. Lancaster also has a vibrant street market on Saturdays with street food and myriad other interesting stalls.
    The popular market town of Kirkby Lonsdale is 16 miles, and for fabulous scenery and walks, why not try picturesque Arnside and Sandside, 14 miles? Historic Sunderland Point is 8 miles, whilst across the river, Condor Green and Glasson Dock are 9 miles: both remnants of a bygone era, one famous as a smugglers’ haunt, the other a failed attempt to establish itself as a busy port for the export of Yorkshire coal to Ireland and the west coast of England.
