Children will love Brockholes Nature Reserve, Bowland Wild Boar Park and the Roman museum at Ribchester. There is also a dry ski slope nearby at Pendle. Other places of interest include Gawthorpe Hall, Samlesbury Hall, Townley Hall and Clitheroe with its castle and museum. The Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are both within an hour’s drive.     Situated in the grounds of the owner’s working farm, Old Hollow Cottage is a wing of a larger property and provides cosy and comfortable holiday accommodation. It borders Natural England’s Nature Reserve of 5,000 acres of salt marsh on the Ribble Estuary Nature Reserve. The reserve is one of the UK’s sites for wintering wildfowl, and is literally right on the doorstep with direct access to a designated footpath. With RSPB Hesketh Out Marsh within 2 miles and RSPB Marshside and Martin Mere both within 5 miles, this is the perfect base for nature lovers and bird watchers. The network of footpaths and dedicated cycle routes make this a great destination for those who love the outdoors. This is a great area for cycling and guided cycle tours can be arranged with the owner. There are some great walks from the doorstep and you can cycle into Southport which then connects to the Trans Pennine Trail. There are also 10 golf courses within 10 miles. Whilst the cottage has its own patio and seating area, guests also have access to the owner’s fantastic garden. With views towards the Pennines, this beautiful garden has a large pond which is home to a couple of resident swans as well as several pieces of sculpture made from driftwood, one of which has been romantically named ‘The Embrace’ by the owner. The Victorian seaside town of Southport which as well as offering lots of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes, also has a fairground, cinema, bowling and indoor water park, providing lots of leisure activities for when the weather is not so great. The train station in Southport provides easy access into Liverpool, approximately 30 minutes, with all its museums, theatres, shopping, Liverpool One, Albert Dock, and other attractions too numerous to mention. Trains also operate to the historic city of Chester, approximately 60 minutes. Other places of interest nearby include National Trust’s Rufford Old Hall, 6 miles, Preston ,15 miles, and the coastal town of Formby, a conservation area whose protected pine woods and sand dunes are home to red squirrels and natterjack toads, 15 miles. If you fancy a longer drive, Ribble Valley and the city of Lancaster can both be reached in an hour. Just over an hour’s drive will take you into the southern Lake District or Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Beach 3 miles. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 2 miles.
