    Gardener’s cottage, built in the late 18th Century, adjoins a Victorian Mansion and is full of character and rustic charm. It was originally part of a farming estate with meat hooks still featuring above the fireplace. The original house was Georgian and was built in 1791. It was owned by a wealthy wool merchant, Joseph Whitridge, who paid for Bootle Chapel and The Manse to be built in 1780. The Grice family, landowners and magistrates, were the next owners and in 1892 the frontage of the main house was redesigned in a Victorian Gothic style. The property has changed owners several times since but is still a busy family home. The cottage is set in four acres of mature walled gardens and woodland, with a river running through the heart of it.

    Footpaths lead to the lower Lakeland Fells, a waterfall (ideal for picnics) and spectacular coastal views. Located within the very picturesque south western side of the Lake District National Park, in the village of Bootle.
    Gardener’s cottage is ideally situated to explore the beautiful valleys of Eskdale and Wasdale and the stunning Cumbrian Coast. The Historic 13th Century Castle at Muncaster, the ’Laal Ratty’ miniature railway and the quaint seaside town of Ravenglass are all within seven miles. In Bootle you will find a general store/post office and a tearoom. In the evenings of the first Friday and Saturday of each month, there is pop-up pub at Millstones, with bands playing and pub quizzes.
