Compton Beach is 2 miles along the coast road. Spectacular at low tide, it is great for walks, catching the surf, building sandcastles and hunting for fossils and dinosaur footprints. The picturesque town of Yarmouth, where the ferry arrives from Lymington, is a flat 3-mile walk from the cottage along the river. Freshwater Bay was a hub for many interesting characters during Victorian times: Dimbola Lodge, the home of Julia Margaret Cameron, a world renowned photography pioneer, is at the end of the lane; a little further up the road is Tennyson’s home, Farringford.
    The island can be explored by open top bus which stops at the end of Coastguards Lane. Calbourne Mill, the only working mill on the Isle of Wight, features a small war museum, rural exhibits and a café. Chessell Pottery Barns is another attraction where you can paint your pots and enjoy lovely food.

    Lavender Cottage is situated on Sun Hill in the historic and charming Old Town area of Cowes. One of a row of three cottages, it is far enough away from the main street to be peaceful and quiet, yet is just yards away from the amenities that Cowes has to offer, such as a multitude of pubs, restaurants and shops, as well as yacht clubs and world class sailing facilities. The holiday cottage itself is believed to date from about 1780 and is built in traditional Georgian style, laid out over three floors. On the ground floor there is an open-plan living room and dining area, leading to a well appointed kitchen, complete with Aga. The first floor comprises two bedrooms, one double and one bunk, and a bathroom with a shower. There are views to the Solent and Cowes harbour from the windows. The top floor consists of a large double bedroom, again with views to the Solent and the harbour. Lavender Cottage benefits from a stylish, south-facing terraced garden, which is fully enclosed. There is also a shed for storing bikes.
    Cowes can date its colourful history back to at least the early 15th century, when Henry VIII founded castles there to defend against the French. The west fort in Cowes still survives to this day, albeit without the original Tudor towers, as Cowes Castle, now home to the world famous Royal Yacht Squadron. Cowes has long had royal connections, with much of the architecture of the Old Town dating from the Georgian and Victorian periods. Lavender Cottage is a lovely example, being right in the heart of the historic Old Town. During the reign of George IV, Cowes began its career as the ‘yachting capital’ of the world. 1826 was the year that the Royal Yacht Squadron organised a three day regatta for the first time. The king attended the following year and presented a cup, and the event is now known as Cowes Regatta. This excellent event attracts 1,000 boats and about 10,000 sailors, ranging from professional and olympic superstars to family boats and enthusiastic amateurs. A lively event with gigs, bands, the Red Arrows and much celebration. There are many other interesting events and festivities throughout the year, and plenty other attractions around the island to keep the whole family entertained. For the outdoor enthusiast, there are many beaches where swimming can be enjoyed, as well as golf, water sports, scenic walking, cycling or riding. Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne House, various NT homes and gardens, animal/wildlife centres and country/adventure parks all make good days out. Beach 500 yards.
