    A charming entrance hall, with hanging space for coats and plenty of room for muddy walking boots, leads you in to the comfortable living/dining room with woodburner and wooden floors. From the living room you pass through the rear hall into the well equipped, fully fitted kitchen overlooking the garden. The stairs lead up from the rear hallway to three beautifully appointed bedrooms, two of which have sea views. Upstairs you will also find a spacious bathroom with a shower over the bath.
    Coastguards is ideally situated in a quiet lane and a lovely place for couples, small groups of friends or families to stay, from which to explore this beautiful island.
    This area is renowned for its spectacular walks: 4 miles west over Tennyson Down gets you to the Needles; to the east, Tennyson Trail takes you to Brook, Mottistone, Shorwell and even as far as Carisbrooke, encompassing breathtaking views, great country pubs and National Trust and English Heritage properties along the way. Compton Beach is 2 miles along the coast road. Spectacular at low tide, it is great for walks, catching the surf, building sandcastles and hunting for fossils and dinosaur footprints. The picturesque town of Yarmouth, where the ferry arrives from Lymington, is a flat 3-mile walk from the cottage along the river. Freshwater Bay was a hub for many interesting characters during Victorian times: Dimbola Lodge, the home of Julia Margaret Cameron, a world renowned photography pioneer, is at the end of the lane; a little further up the road is Tennyson’s home, Farringford.
    The island can be explored by open top bus which stops at the end of Coastguards Lane. Calbourne Mill, the only working mill on the Isle of Wight, features a small war museum, rural exhibits and a café. Chessell Pottery Barns is another attraction where you can paint your pots and enjoy lovely food.
    Outdoor pursuits are all easily accessible: Tapnell Farm is within easy reach which, as well as having a lovely restaurant, gallery, interesting animals and an indoor play area, hosts the Isle of Wight Activity Centre which can organise canoeing, coasteering and grass surfing at Freshwater Bay.
