Herefordshire

Although Herefordshire is now a place of beautiful tranquility it has not always been like that. Its history is one of border conflicts and war and as such has a fascinating past with castles and ancient monuments that bear testament to more turbulent times.

This rural county has miles of rolling green landscapes and a fantastic agricultural heritage, bustling market towns and pretty villages, country pubs and quirky shops; a welcoming place for visitors who come to recharge their batteries.

The Normans build a number of castles here which were home to their wealthy landlords and earls, of particular note is Goodrich Castle near Ross-on-Wye which is extremely well preserved and the romantic Wigmore Castle, family home to the Mortimers whose heir Edward IV took the thrown of England in the aftermath of the War of the Roses.

Herefordshire has a host of ancient churches not least of which is Hereford Cathedral which contains the Mappa Mundi a medieval map of the world as envisaged in about 1289.

The old market town of Ross-on-Wye is strategically positioned above the River Wye, offers magnificent views and is perfectly placed for lovely walks along the Wye Valley (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). The town itself is packed with historical interest which can be fully revealed at the Ross Heritage Centre at the 17th century Market House. Also of interest is Leominster situated in the Herefordshire ‘Marches’; a quintessential English town dating from medieval times with antique shops and typical ‘black and white’ houses.

Herefordshire is famed for its produce, so it’s perhaps no surprise to find out that some of its best attractions proudly celebrate this agricultural heritage, not least it’s tradition for cider making. Many cider making farms offer tours and sampling for visitors which provides the perfect excuse to try some genuine Herefordshire cider!

    Many years ago, The Cider House was used for storage of grain and home-produced cider barrels (from which its name derives), and preceding that, it housed the farmstead’s cows. More recently, the owners of this model Flemish Bond brick-building have seen it transformed into a calm, comfortable and relaxing retreat in the hills. History emanates from every corner of the farm; earthworks are still visible along the edge of the spinney which dates back to 1066, and the land around the present location of Highbridge Farm has been worked since the Norman times. Buildings of the farm have been present since c1540, and although it has now silted up and planted with young trees, the small stream was once dammed to form a header pool, most likely used to feed the nearby River Leadon. Also visible are medieval ridge and furrow earthworks, a ploughing system used in the Middle Ages (which have been mapped from aerial photos as part of the Malvern Hills National Mapping Programme). Sure enough, the property is great for those who have a thirst for history.

    Walkers can enjoy walks from the doorstep and beyond to the Malvern Hills; you might want to bring a camera, sketch pad and pencil, as the area is also popular with photographers, artists and cyclists alike. There are many historical places of interest to visit including castles, National Trust houses and gardens. Ledbury itself offers a selection of boutique shops, galleries, restaurants and local attractions. The picturesque Forest of Dean is well worth a visit for a picnic, or absorb the stunning scenery of the Wye Valley.
