West Meon is a small village tucked away in the South Downs National Park, located on the headwaters of the River Meon and very near the hills that make up the South Downs Way; this picturesque village offers visitors the perfect chance to immerse themselves in rural country life.

With a history that dates back to the Iron and Bronze Ages, West Meon may be small, but it’s packed full of historical attractions and beautiful scenery. Take a step back in time and wander through the village, by the stone cross that is the West Meon’s most prominent landmark, or visit the flint church of St John the Evangelist, built in 1846.

The village is also home to a traditional butcher, pub, village store and post office, most of which are housed in listed buildings with oodles of character. West Meon is filled with picturesque stone and thatched cottages and the beautiful gardens and verdant landscapes add to the relaxing atmosphere. A walk along the winding high street will lead you down to the valley where the River Meon flows and watercress is still grown in abundance. This pristine river is also a popular fly fishing destination and supports a thriving wildlife population.

There are plenty for those who enjoy the great outdoors, as West Meon features some of Britain’s most beautiful countryside. Enjoy a brisk walk on the South Downs Way, which forms part of the National Park, and admire the chalky cliffs and flint that has been used in buildings all over the village, or stroll over the hills and down into Lippen Wood, where you will find the remains of a Roman Villa that was once home to some of the village''s first inhabitants.

Within easy reach are the glorious South Downs, Portsmouth with historic ship yards, the Spinnaker Tower, waterside dining & ferry trips to the Isle of Wight, Cathedral cities Winchester & Chichester, Southampton with its remarkable maritime history, the vast array of scenic walks in the New Forest, beaches at Lee-On-Solent, Hill Head and The Witterings.
    Walking and cycling enthusiasts will enjoy both the Meon Valley Railway Line trail, accessible from Droxford, and Beacon Hill accessed via Exton (2 miles). Shop, PO and three pubs (one was Good Pub Guide ‘Hampshire dining pub of the year 2011’), located in Droxford Village ½ mile.

    In a very convenient location, White Horse Cottage is within walking distance of several village amenities, including the award winning inn, The Thomas Lord, which is named after the founder of Lords cricket ground who is buried in the village churchyard. There is also a village shop, post office, café and a butchers, who won the Hampshire Life Butcher of the Year award in 2014. There are local buses to various destinations including Winchester and Petersfield.
    In the heart of the South Downs National Park, this wonderful part of Hampshire provides direct access to miles of scenic walks across the Meon Valley, including the South Downs Way. Neighbouring East Meon, 3 miles, has a pretty church and good pubs. Within easy reach are the glorious South Downs, Queen Elizabeth Country Park, the naval city of Portsmouth with its historic dockyard, home to Nelson’s Victory and The Mary Rose, along with waterside dining, extensive designer shopping and ferry trips to the Isle of Wight. The ancient city of Winchester with its stunning cathedral and science centre, Southampton with its shopping centre and the New Forest with its extensive heathland walks, riding and cycling opportunities is approximately 40 minutes away.
