Portsmouth

Portsmouth is the second largest city in Hampshire and can be found just 19 miles south-east of Southampton. This waterfront city is built around the world''s oldest working dry dock and has a rich naval history that is celebrated in its many museums, old forts and docked ships, as well as a lively atmosphere with busy restaurants, pubs and bars, excellent shopping and a lively arts scene.

For those wishing to explore the nautical history of the UK, Portsmouth should be the first place to visit. Sitting in her docks are Lord Nelson''s flagship, the HMS Victory, what remains of the Tudor built Mary Rose, which was saved from the sea bed over 30 years ago, and the mighty iron-hulled Warship, HMS Warrior. The Royal Naval Museum can be found at the docks and the D-Day Museum is also well worth a visit for some more contemporary history.

Portsmouth has a thriving shopping centre and also a good selection of entertainment venues to suit all tastes. There are often big names in the music world appearing at the Guild Hall; there is also a comedy club, a number of cinemas and numerous smaller venues that host live jazz, folk and rock music. Portsmouth’s culinary offerings vary from traditional seaside fare such as fish & chips to high end fresh seafood restaurants, in addition you’ll find a thriving cosmopolitan area, with cocktail bars, coffee-shops and bistros.

Visitors to England’s south coast will find that Portsmouth is one of the sunniest places in the UK and often has some of the highest peak-time temperatures in the hottest months, so check out Portsmouth holiday cottages for an activity packed self-catering break in the sun!
