Set within the glorious countryside of the South Downs National Park, Petersfield is an ancient 11th century town with a vibrant atmosphere, plenty of independent shops, cafes and restaurants and is the perfect cottage holiday base for exploring the beautiful county of Hampshire.

Petersfield is one of the county''s most popular towns and ideally located for exploring the countryside of the South Downs, pretty rural villages and cosy country pubs. It dates back to Norman times and retains much of its old world charm, with ancient listed buildings, the historic market square and the ancient Norman Church of St. Peter.

The Market Square is surrounded by shops and places to eat and drink and there are several specialist boutiques, a farm shop and an award winning chocolate shop. There are twice weekly markets and each month, the square hosts a farmers'' market, providing a range of locally sourced produce. There is also an occasional French market attracting visiting stall holders from Normandy.

For a change of pace, enjoy a short stroll to Petersfield Heath, an area of outstanding natural beauty. There is a 22-acre pond, which is a magnet for waterfowl and is used for fishing and boating. The area also features several ancient burial sites and walking trails through the heath and woodland, including one specifically designed for wheelchair access. There is plenty to keep the children amused, including feeding the ducks, a children''s play area and a cafe, serving ice creams.

Petersfield has many other attractions, including the Flora Twort Gallery, where several pieces of art and the Bedales Costume Collection are displayed, and the Petersfield Museum is worth a visit to get some historical insight into the area. Close to the town is the Butser Ancient Farm, an archaeological research site that is open to the public. Featuring ancient buildings, crops and livestock from the period, the site is both fun and educational and depicts a picture of life in Britain 3,000 years ago.
