Tewkesbury

Originally an ancient settlement at the point where the Rivers Severn and Avon meet, the historic town of Tewkesbury provides a picturesque setting, ideal for total relaxation away from the bustle of urban life.

The town is known for its astonishingly well preserved medieval architecture, half-timbered Tudor buildings, overhanging top stores and narrow streets and alleyways. The magnificent 12th century Tewkesbury Abbey dominates the town and boasts the highest Norman tower in England. Visitors can amble between ancient buildings, taking in the rich history of the town or hunt out Gloucestershire’s oldest pub, the Black Bear, for a pub lunch.

If history isn’t your thing the town has an array of speciality shops, inns and restaurants where visitors can enjoy a cream tea or a pint and sample some of the delicious local food and drink. If you visit in February, you may catch the Tewkesbury Winter Ales Festival, a highly anticipated event in the town’s calendar.

Enjoy a leisurely boat trip on the river Avon taking in the acres of beautiful green countryside and picturesque Cotswold villages. If you’re feeling more adventurous try your hand at canoeing or kayaking.

Situated within easy reach of the Cotswolds, Tewkesbury is also handy for days out in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Worcester to the north. There’s a good range of outdoor activities, including golf, fishing, horse riding and cycling within easy reach of the town.
