The rich and diverse landscape of Gloucestershire will stay with you forever. Where else can you chase wheels of cheese down a near-vertical slope (Cooper’s Hill); search for the bones of Russian bears in an ancient woodland (the Forest of Dean); or explore the nooks and crannies of Hogwarts, just like Harry Potter (Gloucester Cathedral)?
Cottages with swimming pools in Gloucestershire will give you the freedom to take in all of these sights, and many more. The Forest of Dean is a natural draw, and contains some truly ancient trees dating back to before humans arrived in Britain (as well as those Russian bear bones – ask a local ‘who killed the bears’ and you will hear all about it). Cottages with pools near Coleford or Lydney are best placed to take advantage of the forest area and the many walking routes around it.
For a traditional holiday cottage with a pool, head for one of the pretty villages of the Cotswolds, such as Bourton-on-the-Water , Chipping Campden or Tewkesbury . These little medieval towns are perfectly preserved and beloved by visitors and residents alike. In keeping with Gloucestershire’s foodie reputation, the Cotswolds are packed full of organic farms, gastro-pubs and traditional tea rooms – visit Stow-on-the-Wold for some of the best bakeries in the county, and Cirencester for trendy delis, pubs and restaurants.
The Gloucestershire Cotswolds are also renowned for their literary history – J.R.R. Tolkien was said to have based The Shire on the village of Moreton-In-Marsh (The Bell Inn is believed to have been the inspiration for The Prancing Pony in The Lord of the Rings novels), and J.K. Rowling was born and raised in Chipping Sodbury.
A cottage break in Gloucestershire can take you in any number of directions, each one more beautiful and fascinating than the last.
