The picturesque Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offers stunning scenery and canoeing on the Wye. Cheltenham is only about a half-hour drive and is especially popular for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and other horse racing festivals. The Literary Festival has also grown over the years to major international prominence, but festivals aside, the town itself is well worth visiting. Guests are also within easy reach of Ross-on-Wye and further afield, but within an hour’s drive, are the towns of Monmouth, Usk, Abergavenny and the pretty villages of the Cotswolds.     In the grounds of Grade II listed Charingworth Court can be found this delightful, spacious, timber framed barn, restored to make a perfect base for exploring the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The centre of historic Winchcombe is just a short stroll away with its restaurants, pubs and shops. The hills around are rich in well-signed footpaths, including the Cotswold Way at the bottom of the drive. The towns of Broadway, Chipping Campden, Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh are all worth exploring, while Regency Cheltenham is just 8 miles away.
    The Barn itself is a really special conversion. Part of it dates from about 1650 and is mentioned by the renowned Nikolaus Pevsner in his Gloucestershire guide. Much of the original structure was gutted by fire in the 1960s, when a car stored inside caught fire. The rest was patched up then, but not much used. The main house and barn came into new ownership in the 1990s. After finishing restoring the main house and creating new gardens, the owners turned to the barn as the final element of their restoration work. Only part of the shell remained, including some original red bricks and some striking oak beams. Fortunately the owners had an old photograph of the barn before the fire. This showed how much bigger the barn had been prior to the fire. After seeing the old foundations, the planners agreed to proposals to rebuild the lost part. So, in 2010 work started on rebuilding, and a timber framed section was added to the existing part using traditional techniques and materials, and also meeting the requirements of modern building regulations. The original timber frame was repaired and restored, and the poor quality 1960s materials were replaced where necessary. New sections of timber frame were then lifted in by crane and put together like a giant three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle.
    Inside, contemporary furnishings blend elegantly with traditional features and modern fabrics. While the living room is part of the new structure, the wood frame on display gives the room a period feel. The double height kitchen/dining area has a warm mellow feel, with the original timber framed brick wall making a striking feature. The kitchen units match the rosy brick colour. Glazed on each side where the original barn doors would have opened, the hallway opens to the roof 8 metres above, where a beautiful Italian glass chandelier hangs. The wood-burning stove and underfloor heating keep the barn warm and comfortable throughout the year. The upstairs landing displays original 1600s oak beams, while the oak floors and exposed oak timber frame all add to the period charm. The en-suite bedroom has open oak framework filled with glass, and 6ft oak bed in keeping with the traditional oak framing. Shops, pub and restaurants 400 yards.
