Gloucester

The historic cathedral city of Gloucester is the gateway to England''s West Country, and is the county town of Gloucestershire. Its backdrop is the Cotswolds Hills and sits on the banks of the River Severn in the green Severn Valley.

The picturesque Cotswolds lie to the east of the city, and the Forest of Dean and the Welsh borders are situated to the west.

Gloucester is a particularly welcoming, safe and relaxed city, and visitors often return year after year. The city is relatively flat and centred on four pedestrianised streets; Northgate, Southgate, Eastgate and Westgate - it is easy to navigate on foot. Cycling is a popular activity, and there are many cycle routes through the city and its suburbs and linking Gloucester to Cheltenham.

Sights and attractions within the city include Gloucester Cathedral, a magnificent 70 metre high 11th century building, Gloucester Quays is a modern shopping and cinema complex that is centred around the historic docklands, also visit the informative Soldiers of Gloucestershire Military Museum, the Gloucester Folk Museum, the Beatrix Potter Museum and Shop, Gloucester Waterways Museum and the Gloucester City Museum & Art Gallery.

Gloucester Guildhall is a thriving performing arts venue, and the Gloucester Ski & Snowboard Centre provides year round dry slope skiing. The Severn Bore, a large tidal event that periodically surges upstream, is popular among kayakers and surfers.

Further afield, Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, The Bird Park, Prinknash Abbey, Cotswold Wildlife Park and the International Centre for Birds of Prey provide entertainment for all the family. The Forest of Dean provides miles of tranquil oak forest trails, and rolling hills and quaint villages make the Cotswolds the perfect location for a leisurely drive.
