Exmoor’s unique landscape has to be seen to be believed. It is part woodland, part moorland, part farmland and all beautiful.
Stretching across Devon and Somerset, Exmoor National Park is the perfect place for a cottage break. For a wild and windy seaside adventure, choose a cottage with a pool along the Exmoor Heritage Coast, where rugged cliffs and craggy rock formations are broken up by impossibly idyllic sandy coves. Bird watchers love the coastal paths and the area around Porlock Vale, where you can spot kestrels, peregrines, goshawks and raptors.
Cottages with private pools near the Dunkery and Horner Wood Nature Reserve are great for spotting woodland creatures such as hedgehogs, squirrels, woodpeckers and owls. Parts of the Exmoor National Park (such as Horner Wood) have been continuously forested areas for thousands of years, so there is an amazing array of flora and fauna to discover, just a stone’s throw from your cottage base.
In the heart of the National Park, there are more than 1000 kilometre of walking and cycling paths where you can wear yourself out before returning to a relaxing holiday cottage with a pool at the end of the day.
Cottages with swimming pools are the perfect addition to any active holiday, and Exmoor is full of fun and unusual activities. As well as hiking, horse riding and cycling, you can go kayaking along the River Exe or even coasteering along the rocky shoreline. To get a sense of the history of the area, visit working farms such as Doniford, and historic landmarks such as the Dunster Working Windmill, which still grinds its own bread flour today.
Or just enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by nature and the mere possibility of adventure on the never-ending moors and rivers which surround you.
