Exmoor

Exmoor’s beaches are unlike any others in the UK. Where else could you follow an ancient forest all the way to the sea? Or spot Jurassic-era fossils in the rock pools while fishing for crabs?

Coastal cottages neat Exmoor National Park offer a whole new way to experience this legendary corner of England. The nature trails and historic sites of the parkland are never too far away, and there are family-friendly events on offer throughout the year. But along the Devon and Somerset coastline, Exmoor feels like a completely different place.

To the west of the national park, the award-winning beaches of Ilfracombe and Woolacombe are famous for their dazzling white sands and turquoise waters, while the sheltered harbour of Watermouth Cove is a favourite with sailors. If you are lucky enough to get a sea view cottage, you will be able to watch the yachts sail across the Bristol Channel while you have your morning coffee.

Seaside cottages are particularly popular with adventurous families who want to explore the local landscape on their own terms. And there is plenty to discover along the Exmoor coast. Blue Anchor, Kilve and Quantoxhead are among the best spots in the country for fossil hunting, and if you can get down to the shoreline when the tide is out, you could pick up a souvenir from the Jurassic or Triassic period.

When you are staying at a cottage by the sea, you can take your time and explore lesser-known beauty spots such as Hele Bay – one of the most photogenic coves in England – or the quirky village of Dunster, which has hardly changed since medieval times.

A coastal holiday cottage is one of the few places which allow you to make the most of the natural beauty of the underappreciated Exmoor coast.
