Essex

Everyone thinks they know Essex, but it is so much more than fake tans and nightclubs. Yes, Essex is the place to go for a day of shopping or great night out, but it can also be surprisingly subtle, with pretty countryside, pristine beaches and historical buildings.

Cottages with pools near Maldon are perfect for boating tours of the Blackwater Estuary, with views over the salt plains and marshland. Further north you will find quiet, sandy beaches at Frinton-on-Sea, Clacton, and Walton-on-the-Naze (which boasts the second largest pier in Great Britain). These seaside towns have a unique charm which harks back to the Victorian era – on hot days you will be spoiled for choice between the many ice cream parlours and vans, and if you’re lucky you might even get to take a donkey ride along the beach!

Further inland, Chelmsford, Braintree and Colchester are the best spots for shopping, with a great mix of malls, markets, designer outlets and one-off boutiques, and of course there is no shortage of tanning salons and beauty parlours. Cottages with private pools can double up as a great catwalk where you can try out your latest wares in privacy and style.

Holiday cottages with pools in Essex will also give you access to some of the most significant historical sites in Britain. Colchester itself is the oldest recorded town in the country, and you can still see the original Roman Wall and Triumphal Arch today, nearly 2000 years after they were built. Learn more about the incredible past of the area at the Colchester Castle Museum (which also just happens to be the largest Roman keep in the world) or with a guided tour around the old town.

Essex is a place with multiple personalities, so cottages with swimming pools can either be a glamorous addition to a TOWIE-style break, or a quiet retreat in the heart of the countryside – the choice is yours.
