Colchester

One of Essex’s most beautiful historic places, Colchester is widely regarded as Britain’s oldest town, with a history extending back to Roman times. The town’s roots are evident as you wander the higgledy piggledy streets, but Colchester is also a modern and vibrant town, with lots to keep visitors happy.

The Grade I listed Colchester Castle was built by William the Conqueror and is a marvellous example of an almost complete Norman Castle. It is built on the foundations of an earlier Roman temple and houses the largest keep ever to have been built in Britain and the biggest remaining keep of its kind in Europe. You can explore the history of Roman Colchester in the Castle museum, or indeed take a visit to one of Colchester’s other museums, there are a few to choose from!

Although famed as being an influence to classic British artists Gainsborough and Constable, Colchester is also home to a modern and vibrant arts scene. With The Minories gallery playing host to many exhibitions by the area''s local artists, Colchester Arts Centre at the former St-Mary-at-the-Walls church is a multi-function arts venue and Colchester also houses both the Mercury and Headgate Theatres, the former is acclaimed as one of the region’s best repertory theatres.

A great day out for all of the family can be found on the edge of the town at Colchester Zoo. Colchester Zoo houses elephants, big cats, monkeys and giant tortoises, as well as many rare and endangered species. The sixty acre site has much to see and explore and provides a fabulous family fun day.

With arts, music, history, great food and a host of shops and boutiques, Colchester has something for everyone, so search for Colchester holiday cottages today, for accommodation in the area.
